Best Kickboard for Swimming in 2025 (Tested by a World Championship Swimmer)

A good kickboard is one of the most underrated training tools in the pool. Isolating your legs forces honest feedback about your kick mechanics — weak ankles, poor hip rotation, and insufficient power all show up immediately. I've been swimming competitively since age 8, competed at the 2008 and 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, won a silver medal at the 2008 FINA World Championships in the 4x100 medley relay, and currently hold the American Record in the 100 yard butterfly for ages 35–39. Kickboard work has been a constant in my training across every level.

I've tested kickboards across thousands of yards of kick sets at every training intensity. The best options balance buoyancy, ergonomic grip shape, and durability. Here are my top 5 picks for 2025.

#1 FINIS Floating Kickboard — Best Overall (~$20–30)

The FINIS Floating Kickboard is the gold standard for competitive swimmers. Its high-density foam provides excellent buoyancy without being overly rigid, and the contoured hand grips reduce wrist fatigue during long kick sets. The board is sized perfectly for adult swimmers — large enough for stability, compact enough for fast drill work. I use this in my own Masters training for everything from easy recovery flutter kick to all-out butterfly kick sets. It holds up well over time and doesn't waterlog like cheaper foam boards.

#2 Speedo Unisex Training Kickboard — Best Runner-Up (~$20–25)

Speedo's training kickboard is a reliable, well-made option that competes closely with FINIS at a similar price point. The slightly narrower profile makes it easier to hold during butterfly kick drills and kick-on-side sets. The foam density is solid and consistent — it won't compress over a season of heavy use. I like this board for swimmers who want a name-brand option with a more streamlined shape. It's widely available and usually in stock at most swim shops and online.

#3 TYR Large Kickboard — Best Value (~$15–20)

The TYR Large Kickboard punches above its price. It's wider than most competition-style boards, which gives less experienced swimmers a more stable platform for building kick strength. The extra surface area also works well for drill work where you need a stable base without fighting the board. It's not as precise as the FINIS for high-speed kick sets, but for club swimmers and fitness swimmers looking for value, it gets the job done. TYR's foam quality has been consistent in my experience and holds up well.

#5 Arena Swim Kickboard — Best for Advanced Swimmers (~$25–35)

Arena's kickboard is designed with competitive swimmers in mind. The tapered, hydrodynamic shape reduces water resistance during kick drills, making it feel less like a drag anchor and more like a precision training tool. It's noticeably firmer than budget boards, which forces better body position — you can't fake good kick technique with a stiff Arena board. I recommend this for swimmers already comfortable with kick mechanics who want to train at the next level. The higher price reflects the build quality.
