Best Kickboards for Swimming 2025 (Tested by a World Championship Swimmer)

Kickboards are one of the most-used tools in competitive swim training, and for good reason — they isolate your kick, let you focus on technique without worrying about your arms, and build leg endurance over long sets. I've been competing since age 8, raced at the 2008 and 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, won a silver medal at the 2008 FINA World Championships in the 4x100 medley relay, and currently hold the American Record in the 100 yard butterfly for ages 35–39. Kickboards have been part of my training toolkit at every stage of my career.

The best kickboards are buoyant enough to keep your hips up, durable enough to survive daily chlorine exposure, and sized right for the type of training you're doing. Here are my top 5 picks for 2025.

#1 Speedo Kickboard — Best Overall (~$25)

The Speedo Kickboard is the standard in competitive swim training — it's the board you'll find on the pool deck at almost every serious program in the country. The foam construction is firm enough to provide solid hip elevation while still being comfortable to grip during long sets. The slightly curved shape helps reduce neck strain for swimmers doing extended kick work. It holds its buoyancy over time and resists the degradation that cheaper foam boards suffer after a season of chlorine exposure. At around $25, it's the reliable workhorse option for any level of swimmer.

#2 TYR Hydrofoil Kickboard — Best for Competitive Swimmers (~$30)

The TYR Hydrofoil Kickboard has a sleek, hydrodynamic design that performs well for swimmers who want a faster kick feel. The ergonomic grip handles on the sides allow multiple hand positions, which is helpful during long kick sets when your grip gets fatigued. The foam is dense and durable, giving good buoyancy while maintaining a slim profile that cuts through the water smoothly. At around $30, it's a step up from basic boards and a solid choice for competitive swimmers who train seriously.

#3 Finis Alignment Kickboard — Best for Technique (~$35)

The Finis Alignment Kickboard has a narrow, elongated shape specifically designed to keep your body in proper horizontal alignment during kick sets. The narrower profile forces you to maintain a tighter, more disciplined kick rather than letting your legs splay out wide. It has a hand hole at the top that keeps your arms locked in front of you, which helps swimmers who tend to drop their elbows or go wide during kick sets. This makes it an excellent technique-focused tool, especially for butterfly and breaststroke kick work. Around $35.

#4 Deboer Swim — My Training Brand

I'm a member of Deboer Swim's Team Elite program, and their gear has been part of my training at every stage of my career. Deboer builds high-performance swimwear and training equipment designed for serious athletes who won't accept shortcuts in their preparation. Their products are built to hold up under daily training conditions — the kind of chlorine exposure that destroys lesser equipment in a few months. If you're putting in real work in the water, this is the brand built for it.

#5 Arena Kickboard — Best Budget (~$15)

The Arena Kickboard is a no-frills, budget-friendly option that gets the job done. It's made from lightweight foam that provides solid buoyancy for basic kick sets, and the compact rectangular shape works well for freestyle and backstroke kicking. At around $15, it's the most affordable quality kickboard on the market — great for newer swimmers, recreational training, or anyone who just needs a backup board for the pool bag. It won't have the ergonomic grip handles or technique-specific design of pricier options, but if you need a reliable kickboard without spending much, this delivers.
