Best Kickboards for Training 2025 (Tested by a World Championship Swimmer)

A kickboard is one of the most fundamental tools in a competitive swimmer's training arsenal — it isolates your legs so you can build kick strength, refine ankle flexibility, and drill lower-body technique without worrying about your arm stroke. I've been competitive swimming since age 8, raced at the 2008 and 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, earned a silver medal at the 2008 FINA World Championships in the 4x100 medley relay, and currently hold the American Record in the 100 yard butterfly for ages 35–39. Kickboard sets are a staple of my weekly training, and I've tested just about every model on the market.

The best kickboards hold their shape through thousands of yards, fit comfortably under your arms, and give you enough buoyancy to maintain proper body position without riding too high. Here are my top 5 kickboards for training in 2025.

#1 Speedo Kickboard — Best Overall (~$25–30)

The Speedo Kickboard has been a pool staple for decades, and for good reason. It features a contoured design with ergonomic cut-outs that allow your arms to rest naturally, reducing shoulder strain on longer kick sets. The high-density EVA foam holds its shape through heavy use and chlorine exposure, and the moderate buoyancy is ideal for both beginner swimmers and competitive athletes drilling 200s and 400s of kick. The Speedo Kickboard is my go-to for most straight kick sets and a great first board for any swimmer.

#2 TYR Pull Float — Best Runner-Up (~$20–25)

The TYR Pull Float is a slimmer, more streamlined option that doubles as both a kickboard and a pull buoy, making it an incredibly versatile training tool. The tapered design keeps you lower in the water than traditional kickboards, which encourages more active kicking rather than letting the board do all the work. The lightweight foam is durable and the compact shape is easy to pack in a swim bag. If you want a board that challenges your kick while staying affordable, the TYR Pull Float is an excellent pick.

#3 Arena Kickboard — Best for Technique Drills (~$20–25)

The Arena Kickboard is a favorite among technique-focused swimmers because of its compact size and firm foam density. It's slightly smaller than a standard board, which forces you to engage your core more actively and maintain better body position — making it excellent for sculling drills, catch drills, and underwater kick sets. The flat profile keeps you streamlined, and the quality foam construction holds up through season after season of heavy chlorine exposure. A great option for swimmers looking to sharpen their kick technique.

#4 Deboer Swim Kickboard — My Training Brand

I'm a member of Deboer Swim's Team Elite program, and their kickboard reflects the same performance-first philosophy as their tech suits and training gear. The Deboer Swim Kickboard features a high-density foam construction that holds its shape even after extended use, with a slightly elevated buoyancy profile that's well-suited for distance kick sets. The streamlined shape and clean finish are exactly what I look for in a training tool. If you want to train with the same gear trusted by elite competitive swimmers, Deboer is a brand worth checking out.

#5 Finis Alignment Kickboard — Best for Beginners (~$20–25)

The Finis Alignment Kickboard is unique because it has a built-in hand pocket that trains swimmers to keep their arms in proper alignment during kick sets. This makes it an ideal teaching tool for age-groupers, developmental swimmers, and anyone working on correcting crossed-over arm entry. The board itself is lightweight, made from soft EVA foam, and available at an accessible price point that makes it a great entry-level kickboard for new competitive swimmers.
