Best Swim Caps for Training 2025 (Tested by a World Championship Swimmer)

A swim cap is one of the most underrated pieces of training equipment in the pool. The right cap keeps your hair out of your face, reduces drag, and holds up through thousands of yards of hard use. But not all caps are built the same — silicone, latex, and polyester caps each perform differently depending on your hair type, training environment, and personal preference. I've been competitive swimming since age 8, raced at the 2008 and 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, earned a silver medal at the 2008 FINA World Championships in the 4x100 medley relay, and currently hold the American Record in the 100 yard butterfly for ages 35–39. Swim caps have been part of my routine for over three decades.

The best swim caps for training fit securely without slipping, stay comfortable through long sets, and hold up through regular chlorine exposure. Here are my top 5 swim caps for training in 2025.

#1 Speedo Silicone Cap — Best Overall (~$10–15)

The Speedo Silicone Cap is the gold standard for training. Silicone holds its shape over time, doesn't tangle or pull hair, and provides a snug, wrinkle-free fit that stays in place through flip turns and push-offs. It's comfortable enough for long practices and durable enough to last a full season. For most swimmers — short hair, long hair, thick hair — silicone is the go-to material, and the Speedo version delivers all of that at a fair price.

#2 TYR Latex Cap — Best for Sensitive Scalps (~$5–10)

Latex caps are thinner and lighter than silicone, which makes them a good choice for swimmers who find silicone too tight or uncomfortable during long practices. The TYR Latex Cap fits snugly, won't slip, and costs less than almost anything else on the market. The tradeoff: latex degrades faster with regular chlorine exposure, so it won't last as long as silicone. But for swimmers who prioritize fit feel over durability — or who want a budget-friendly backup cap — the TYR Latex Cap is a reliable choice.

#3 Finis Floating Swim Cap — Best for Long Hair (~$15–20)

The Finis Floating Swim Cap is specifically designed for swimmers with long or thick hair. Its extra volume accommodates more hair without pulling or compressing, and the soft silicone material is gentle on the scalp during longer practices. It sits higher on the head than a standard cap, which eliminates the uncomfortable pressure that long-haired swimmers often feel with standard silicone caps. If you've ever struggled to fit a full head of hair under a regular cap, the Finis Floating Cap solves that problem.

#4 Deboer Swim Cap — My Training Brand

Deboer Swim is the brand I train with through their Team Elite program, and their caps meet the standards of elite competitive swimming. They're built for performance — a secure fit that won't move during practice, materials that hold up through chlorine exposure, and construction that works for real training volume. If you want to train with the same equipment trusted by world-class swimmers, Deboer is where I'd point you.

#5 Arena Moulded Silicone Cap — Best Budget (~$8–12)

The Arena Moulded Silicone Cap is a solid entry-level silicone cap that delivers reliable performance at a low price. The moulded construction fits most head sizes comfortably, stays in place during practice, and handles regular pool use without degrading quickly. It won't have the exact same feel as a premium cap, but for swimmers who go through caps regularly, need a backup, or are new to training and don't want to overspend, the Arena Moulded Silicone Cap is a smart buy.
