Best Swim Fins for Training 2025 (Tested by a World Championship Swimmer)

Swim fins are one of the most effective training tools in the water. They help you develop ankle flexibility, increase your kick power, and allow you to hold a faster pace so you can focus on stroke mechanics at race speed. But fins are not one-size-fits-all — short blade fins, long blade fins, and monofins all serve different purposes, and the wrong choice can build bad habits or put unnecessary stress on your joints. I’ve been competitive swimming since age 8, raced at the 2008 and 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, earned a silver medal at the 2008 FINA World Championships in the 4x100 medley relay, and currently hold the American Record in the 100 yard butterfly for ages 35–39. Fins have been in my training kit for over three decades.

The best swim fins for training give you the right amount of propulsion, a comfortable fit that won’t cause blisters, and a blade length matched to your training goals. Here are my top 5 swim fins for training in 2025.

#1 Speedo Biofuse 2.0 Training Fins — Best Overall (~$45–55)

The Speedo Biofuse 2.0 is the short blade training fin you’ll find on the deck at virtually every competitive program in the country. The short blade length gives you just enough propulsion to maintain a strong training pace without masking a weak kick — the blade works with your ankle, not for it. The soft silicone construction is easy on your feet during long sets, and the open-heel design accommodates a range of foot sizes. These are my go-to fins for stroke work and kick sets.

#2 TYR Crossblade Training Fins — Best for Ankle Flexibility (~$40–50)

The TYR Crossblade has a unique X-shaped blade design that creates water resistance in multiple directions as you kick. This forces your ankle to work against the water through a full range of motion, making it an excellent tool for developing ankle flexibility — one of the most critical factors in kick efficiency. It’s a more demanding fin than the Biofuse, which makes it less ideal for long aerobic sets but excellent for targeted ankle and kick development work.

#3 Finis Zoomers Gold Training Fins — Best for Speed Development (~$35–45)

The Finis Zoomers Gold are the shortest blade training fin on the market — barely longer than your foot. That minimal blade length means you get very little extra propulsion, which forces your legs and ankles to do essentially all the work. Training with Zoomers is demanding, but it builds an incredibly efficient kick with a tight, fast turnover. They’re the fins I reach for when I want to work on sprint kick mechanics and turnover speed rather than just putting in yardage.

#4 Deboer Swim Fins — My Training Brand

Deboer Swim is the brand I train with through their Team Elite program, and their fins meet the standards of elite competitive swimming. They’re built for performance — the right blade stiffness, a comfortable fit, and construction that holds up through years of hard use. If you want to train with the same equipment trusted by world-class swimmers, Deboer is where I’d point you.

#5 Arena Powerfin Pro — Best Budget (~$25–35)

The Arena Powerfin Pro is a solid short-blade training fin at a budget-friendly price. It’s got enough blade to give you propulsion for longer training sets while still demanding work from your kick, and the durable rubber construction holds up to regular use. For swimmers who need a reliable everyday training fin without spending a lot, the Powerfin Pro delivers good value.
