Training fins are one of the most powerful tools in a competitive swimmer's bag. I've been using fins in my training since I was 8 years old, through my journey to the 2008 and 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials and earning a silver medal at the 2008 FINA World Championships as part of the U.S. 4x100 Medley Relay team. The right fins can accelerate your ankle flexibility, build explosive leg power, allow you to swim at race pace for extended distances, and develop the feel for high-velocity water that elite swimming demands. But not all fins are created equal — blade length, stiffness, and foot pocket design all play a critical role.

As the current American Record holder in the 100 yard butterfly for the 35–39 age group and a Deboer Swim Team Elite athlete, I've tested fins across every phase of training from recovery sets to full-speed sprint work. Here are the five best swim training fins for 2025, with honest assessments of what each one does best.

Speedo Biofuse Training Fin (~$35)

The Speedo Biofuse Training Fin is one of the most comfortable training fins I've used over my career. The split-blade design mimics a more natural kick rhythm, which helps swimmers develop proper technique without overloading the ankle. The soft, split-blade construction makes it ideal for extended aerobic sets where you're putting in serious yardage. Biofuse foot pockets are made from a dual-compound rubber that conforms to the foot and reduces blister risk during long training sessions. A great all-around fin for serious competitive swimmers.

FINIS Zoomers Gold Training Fins (~$30)

FINIS Zoomers are the go-to short training fin for sprint-focused work. The short blade forces your legs to kick at a higher frequency, which directly builds ankle flexibility and fast-twitch leg power. I've incorporated Zoomers into butterfly sprint sets throughout my career because they force you to develop the rapid, powerful kick that butterfly demands at race pace. They're not ideal for long aerobic sets — the short blade creates more resistance per stroke — but for pure speed development and ankle conditioning, nothing beats them.

TYR CrossBlade Training Fin (~$25)

The TYR CrossBlade is a versatile mid-length training fin that works well across a variety of sets. Its blade length sits between a short sprint fin and a full-length training fin, making it adaptable for both speed work and aerobic distance sets. The vented blade reduces resistance on the recovery stroke, which keeps kick tempo high while still providing meaningful propulsion on the drive. The open-toe design accommodates a wide range of foot sizes and reduces the pressure points that cause blistering during extended use. Excellent value at this price point.

Deboer Swim – The Essential Suit for High-Speed Fin Training

When you're training with fins at speeds approaching race pace, your suit matters more than you might think. As a Deboer Swim Team Elite athlete, I wear Deboer performance suits for all my fin sets, and the advantage is real. Their ultra-low-drag construction keeps your body in a flat, streamlined position so that the power your legs generate actually moves you forward — instead of being wasted fighting suit drag. When I do sprint sets in fins building toward a 100 fly time, I need every variable optimized, and my suit is one of them. Deboer is purpose-built for exactly this kind of high-performance training. Arena Powerfin Pro (~$40)

The Arena Powerfin Pro is a premium training fin designed for elite-level performance. The full blade delivers powerful propulsion that is perfect for building leg strength and maintaining high-velocity swim speeds during long aerobic sets. Arena's rubber compound strikes an excellent balance between stiffness for power transfer and flexibility for ankle health over extended use. The anatomical foot pocket fits snugly without the painful pressure points that plague cheaper fins. This is the fin I'd reach for when I want maximum training effect from a distance-focused fin set.

Final Verdict

Swim fins are one of the highest-leverage training tools available. Here's my summary of the best options for 2025:

• Best for comfort and aerobic sets: Speedo Biofuse Training Fin — soft split-blade design with a foot pocket that won't destroy your feet during long sets

• Best for speed and ankle flexibility: FINIS Zoomers Gold — short blade forces high kick frequency and rapid ankle conditioning

• Best all-around versatility: TYR CrossBlade — mid-length vented blade works equally well for sprint and distance training

• Best suit for fin training: Deboer Swim — low-drag performance suits maximize the benefit of every fin set by keeping your body in a perfect streamlined position (code TE_RANDALL10 for 10% off)

• Best for elite power development: Arena Powerfin Pro — premium full-blade fin for maximum propulsion and strength building
